A mouth full of holy words

Never ever underestimate the power of words.

Think about it, what has caused the fall of mankind? Words did. Twisted, deceitful words spoken by the father of all lies to Eve. And ever since that day, he’s been twisting tongues, setting them alight from hell. Sharpening them like arrows with a drop of poison added to their tips (James 3:6)

David knew this well, because he wrote: “Their tongues sting like a snake; the venom of a viper drips from their lips.” And also: “They sharpen their tongues like swords and aim their bitter words like arrows.” “Their mouths are full of cursing, lies, and threats. Trouble and evil are on the tips of their tongues.”  (Ps. 140:3, Ps. 64:3, Ps. 10:7)

That’s why we, as Christians, need holy mouths. Because, God’s words are different. With his Word life was created, light and all that is good. When his Word became flesh He healed the sick, casted out demons and calmed the storm. All with his words. The words that He has spoken are seed sown into the hearts of people. Seed that, when we allow it to live in us and grow, will bear fruits of life (John 1:1-5, Mat. 8:16, John 15:7-8, Mark 4:20).

Our words need to be like that.
We should imagine every word that we speak or write as a seed sown into the hearts of people. Are we sowing good or bad seed? You need to be very sure about this, because the trouble is, once you’ve sown a seed it can not be taken back. As soon as those words leave your mouth, they are free to create. Either life or death. (James 3:5, Prov. 18:21, Prov. 15:4) That’s why we are warned in Prov. 21:23: “Watch your tongue and keep your mouth shut, and you will stay out of trouble.”

How should holy mouths speak?

“Do not let unwholesome (foul, profane, worthless, vulgar) words ever come out of your mouth, but only such speech as is good for building up others, according to the need and the occasion, so that it will be a blessing to those who hear (you speak)”  Eph. 4:29 AMP

Our words should build up, not break down. It should be a blessing, not a curse.

“Live wisely among those who are not believers, and make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be gracious and attractive so that you will have the right response for everyone.” Col. 4:5-6

According to the Oxford dictionary the definition of “gracious” is: “Courteous, kind and pleasant,” and according to the Cambridge dictionary: “Behaving in a pleasant, polite, calm way,”

As believers, we need to stand out in the way that we speak.

You have probably seen the following acronym around:
Before you speak…  THINK!
T – is it true?
H – is it helpful?
I – is it inspiring?
N – is it necessary?
K – is it kind?

Remember, there are great power in your words. Use them responsibly.

God bless
Madeleine
